Answer to Slow Speeds from last week

Thanks, everyone, for your input last week on my slow transfer speeds.

The winner was Jack, who suggested that compression might be causing my problems. Indeed, going from 20Mb/s to around 400Mb/s was as easy as removing the -z flag from rsync.

Jack, thank you very much, and I'm really, really sorry that I didn't take your advice sooner!

I thought that most of the explanations seemed really plausible. I had never seen the compression problem in the wild, but did read someone saying it could be a problem.

Anyway, Glad to hear that you got it working.

Thanks! To be really honest, I didn't think any more about your suggestion until I was reading the manpage on ssh, which recommended not using compression on fast links, too, and I thought to myself "wait a second..." :-)

I'm glad I finally got it working too!

What did Jack win? Maybe a signed patch cable?

I think I have a Matt made patch cable lying around somewhere. It would be an awesome prize to be won.
