Thanks, everyone, for your input last week on my slow transfer speeds.
The winner was Jack, who suggested that compression might be causing my problems. Indeed, going from 20Mb/s to around 400Mb/s was as easy as removing the -z flag from rsync.
Jack, thank you very much, and I'm really, really sorry that I didn't take your advice sooner!

I thought that most of the explanations seemed really plausible. I had never seen the compression problem in the wild, but did read someone saying it could be a problem.

Thanks! To be really honest, I didn't think any more about your suggestion until I was reading the manpage on ssh, which recommended not using compression on fast links, too, and I thought to myself "wait a second..." :-)
I'm glad I finally got it working too!
What did Jack win? Maybe a signed patch cable?
